Where the Mailbox greets the road.....celebrating the expression of creativity and ingenuity....Folk art done by real people.
Almost everyone has one and some have stories....What am I referring to? Mailboxes, of course. Sometimes they are just average and sometimes they are extraordinary...and some of the ones you may encounter are so unusual that they practically beg for a look-see. I had noticed a few special Mailboxes before the Summer of 2005. They were ones that were completely different...for example one looked like an alligator and another one resembled a farm tractor with the big red wheels and all that. But after My Trip to Hawaii and living on a street where every other Mailbox was decorated with Something Hawaiian... I never looked at mailboxes the same way, again. By the way, I took pictures of everything "neat" in Hawaii and these Mailboxes were part of capturing the essence of my trip. I did get a bit of flack from my sisters...they thought that my portraits of Mail Boxes were kind of funny, but I felt that this was part of my Trip to Hawaii and I was going to document every aspect that I could. It turns out that there are more places that have people who love their mail box and take quite a bit of pride in having a Mail box that is special to their heart. When I got back home...the Mailbox was on my mind. No Mailbox was safe from my camera. I started noticing Every Mailbox.
One thing I am working on is to get contest going, just to see how many different stories there are out there... More details to come. Another thing I would love to see is how many people have seen at least a couple of really neat mailboxes in your travels...I know I have. If you have a picture and would like to share that...I will see about a way to post it. Send me an e-mail..... I would love to hear from you...I need ideas for some ways to promote this wonderful art form and I think there are some great stories just WAITING to be found. Please e-mail me with ideas and suggestions: gail@mailboxstories.com... I would greatly appreciate it.
If You have a Mailbox Story you would like to share, please e-mail me... gail@mailboxstories.com. Here are some links to neat Mailbox picture sites as well as some history.
